Pahang in with a chance to lift FA Cup

PETALING JAYA: Pahang are without a silverware in the domestic competitions for five years.

But the Elephants now sense that they have a fighting chance to emulate the feat in 2006, which saw them lift the FA Cup.

Striker R. Surendren said that Pahang, who play against Kuala Lumpur in a quarter-final second-leg match at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan tonight, were well on course to achieve their ambitions.

“There is an air of confidence in the team and we are not going to waste this golden opportunity,” he said.

Pahang won the first-leg match 2-1, which was scheduled as an away game for them. But the match on Tuesday was played in Kuantan because the KL Football Stadium in Cheras was under renovation.

However, Surendren said that they cannot find too much comfort in holding the lead as KL were no pushovers and had knocked out defending champions Negri Sembilan 4-2 on penalty kicks in the second round.

“We will not underestimate our opponents. The first-leg match was close. We will not let the home fans down,” said the former Selangor striker, who has three goals to his credit.

KL will have to come out firing from all cylinders to beat Pahang by at least two goals if they were to advance to the semi-finals. Pahang are also holding the away-goal advantage.

Pahang coach Dollah Salleh would not want to waste this golden opportunity to take the Elephants to their first semi-finals in five years. In fact, it is also the last game Pahang will be playing at the Darulmakmur Stadium this season.

Their home venue will be closed soon for renovations to improve on facilities for Sukma (Malaysia Games), which Pahang will host next year.

They will have to play all their remaining Super League fixtures away. At home last week in their last league fixture, Pahang chalked up a surprise 2-0 win over leaders Kelantan.
